In the Year King Uzziah Died

In the year that King Uzziah died….

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up…. Isaiah 6:1

Quite an interesting time stamp. The year King Uzziah died. Why?
King Uzziah was an incredible leader for Israel. Taking the throne at 16 then reigning for 52 years, leading the Nation of Israel to political, financial, and military power.
2 Chronicles 26:5 says that “as long as he (Uzziah) sought the Lord, God made him prosper.
How must the Nation have been feeling when their great leader is now gone?

In the year that King Uzziah died…

It was at that time that God revealed Himself to the prophet Isaiah…and He is seated…on His throne….high and lifted up….
Not pacing the floor…not wondering how the nation of Israel is going to keep going…He is not worried… He is seated….

In fact, He has been seated since creation… since he spoke all things into existence.
He didn’t fling the stars or moons…He only has to speak…never lifting a finger….and He then rested.

And in Hebrews 4:10 , He invites us into that same rest He promises.

He’s got this. He has a plan. He is seated. He is in control. Just as he has been since creation.

Just like He was with Job. Just like He was during World Wars. Just like He was with Hitler. Just like He was in the Great Depression. Just like He did when His son hung on the cross for you.

In the year that King Uzziah died…
In the year that you lost a loved one…
In the year that cancer came…
In the year that you lost a job….
In the year the virus hit….
I saw the Lord….and He was seated…
And He was high and lifted up….

Because the same God who reigns above…also sustains beneath…

Retreat to the Father

We can learn a lot from studying how Jesus handled life. We see in the verses in today’s devotion that he stayed in prayer with the Father. This kept him focused and he knew just what to do and when to do it.

Yeah, but that was Jesus… he was perfect.

Another famous “faster” we can learn from is Daniel. How was he able to have such confidence in God when faced with being thrown in the lions den?

In Daniel 6:10 it says he prayed 3 times a day just as he had always done. His retreats to God in prayer cultivated his unwavering faith in God. It is through those times we can develop our dependency on Him.

I have started to take 15 minutes mid afternoons as the day is unraveling and just sitting and letting my mind refresh. No directed prayers, no reading, no chasing thoughts, just letting God reorganize and put things in perspective.

Retreat to the Father and then rely on what He says to do.

If you know who you are, you will know what to do

Good Morning Saints,

Let that sink in…. Saints. There is a guy in our breakfast group that greets us this way and it always hits me.. Saint. It’s a reminder of how God sees us. The enemy will try to label our identity with our failures. It is not, “Hello Divorcee, Good Morning Liar, ….or hello Mr. Bad with Money, or whatever…”

Romans 8:1 tells us that when we are IN Chirst there is NO condemnation… NONE. Today as we fast and pray we need to let that sink in. We have to believe that about ourselves just like any other promise in the Bible. Once we know who we are, we will know what to do. Romans 6:6-7 tells us that not just our sins were crucified on the cross but that our sinful selves were crucified, and the power of sin is GONE. That is really really good news. That is something you and I need to process and grasp…but man, we gotta share that. People would be set free if they understood who they were in Christ. If they know who they were, they would know what to do.

From Knowing to Believing to Persuaded to Committed

2 Timothy 1:12

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

From Knowing to Believing to Persuaded to Committed

This verse has been rattling in my head and heart for over a week now.

I have prayed it over and over for myself, for you, and to convey it to everyone I get a chance to talk to.

We all start out knowing about Christ and many start dabbling in believing. But until we become persuaded by His ability we fall short in committing everything to Him.

I am convinced of His promises for us but only after having to walk it out and building that trust through continual commitment of the little things more often than the bigger things. And He is always faithful.

Notice the part of the verse that says, “he is able to keep that which I have committed…“. We can find great assurance in knowing that We are not alone in sustaining this walk with Christ. That he is actively protecting the covenant commitment that we have one to another… Just like the good good father that he is.

Today I commit to Him:

My family- Him continuing to let my kids experience Him- not just read about Him

My Work- As a way to teach and develop my guys spiritually. That His promises of being diligent and full of integrity will cause us to succeed.

Wisdom- that He will guide me into all truth. That He will give me wisdom and ability beyond myself.

Today, what do you need to commit to Him? Knowing not just that He is capable, but that He will… Live persuaded

I Am

Over the last few months I have been pouring into God, searching and examining my ways and my heart. Checking motives, the why…. making sure what I say and the actions are not simply passing from the head to the mouth without going from the mind to the heart then through my mouth and out of my feet and hands. Making certain that I am not seeking an outcome or solution based on ideas but that God’s way of doing things is a principle. That my faith is in him alone and not the how of He will accomplish His work. God reminded me, almost audibly, Monday that He is “I AM”. That’s all he said to me… “I AM”

There’s complete freedom and a peace that flows through you when knowing and believing He is “I AM”

John Piper said it this way which is very good and makes me burdened all the more for my family and friends…

The vast majority of people who say they believe in God treat him this way. He is like hydrogen. You learned once in school that it is in the air you breathe, but after that, your belief in it has made no difference in your life. Every time someone takes a poll, you say, “Of course, hydrogen exists.” Then you return to things that matter.

Put yourself forward a few years to the day when every human being will give an account of himself before the living God. God will say to millions of people, “Now it is my understanding that you said often during your life that you believed in me. You affirmed my existence. Is that right?” “Yes.” “And is it not true that in your life the more honor and importance and virtue and power and beauty a person had, the more regard he was paid and the more respect he was shown and the more admiration he received? Is that not the case?” “Yes.” “Then why is it that I had such an insignificant place in your life since you say you believed in me? Why didn’t you feel more admiration for me and seek my wisdom more often and spend time in fellowship with me and strive to know the way I wanted you to make all your everyday decisions? Why did you treat me as though I were like hydrogen?”

Worry and Fear

Fear and Worry

What you love most, you also fear losing the most. And what ever threatens what you love most controls you.

Ask yourself that question and think on it. What does your fear show that You love the most? (List them all)

What threats to those things listed above control you? How does it control your actions, reactions, and decisions?

In essence, The point ultimately being that you will will build your life and construct your identity around whatever driving fears you have.

I never really knew how much fear controlled me? How not being in control of those things led to behaviors that I tried to curtail. Fear and worry are a stronghold. We can’t just throw scripture at behaviors as if obeying the law will bring change. Our freedom is found by taking what Christ has done and uprooting what is at the core.

“Worry is the result of trying to carry a burden that never belonged on our shoulders.” -The Christian Atheist

In contrast, “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Proverbs 9:10

Begin with a right view of God. We know he tells us to not worry, to cast our cares, to not be anxious but to pray about everything. Why is that so? Why does He say that?

Because “perfect love casts out ALL fear”…(1 John 4:7-21)

I didn’t understand that until I read these verses:

“Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” 2 Corinthians 5:11-15 ESV

“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” “No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35-39

Be fully persuaded of His love for us. Whatever worry we have His love for us will drive out. Worry is a control issue within us. Philippians 4:6-8 gives us the outline to shift our thinking from fear based to faith based thinking.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

Our faith can not be based on our expectations nor our faith in the outcome itself. Our faith has to be in the love God has for us and His promises found in His Word.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28
